I really enjoy my SJG, and after converting it to a smoker with the stock pot with two cooking racks it's become a great portable grill/smoker. That said, it still can't compete with my UDS for ease of use and consistency, and I find that in cold weather(below 30*) it won't get up to or hold temp especially if it's windy whereas the UDS isn't really affected at all. I know it's apples and oranges, that's just my experiences with the two as a comparison. Honestly I was sold on the little Weber as a go-to smoker until it got cold outside, then I had to go back to the ol' UDS. If it's even slightly windy I think the side air intakes on the SJG allow air to blow in one side and right out the other, pulling the heat right out with it. In retrospect I feel a SJS would function better with the bottom intake. Still the SJG's are damn good cookers for what they are and nice and portable too.
Food looks good by the way Freddy.

I agree, the kettles rock! Curious though... For quick weeknight cooks, are you saying that you like the kettle enough to still neglect the Genesis?? To me, the Genesis is one heck of a grill!! Just wondering if in your opinion, the kettle is superior to the Genesis?? Reason I'm asking is because I've been considering selling my beloved Genesis ep-330 for a 26.75" kettle. Just don't want to regret my decision ;)

And yes, maybe I'm crazy but I'm finding my cooks in the wsj to come out better, juicier & my wife and kids say the same. So far, I've only done quick weeknight cooks on it and its not much different from waiting for the gasser to come up to temp.... Small price to pay for great cooks!

So I cruised around the web and found a fix from a gent named Alan. And here is my SJG using Alan's mod. You use foil to direct airflow under your coals.....Rick solid temps with the lid on:

In the photo of Alan's mod, are the coals banked over the bottom vent? Or is the bottom vent below the foil? Hard to tell from the pic. Glad to see it's working for you, brother!
