I normally hate slaw... Is that weird? I usually avoid it at all costs. But I know that other people actually do like it.

Does any one have a good slaw recipe for a hater like me to try? I've got a shoulder cooking right now, and some family coming over this afternoon that I'd like to be able to actually have an apparent "normal" BBQ side with.

Don't remember where I got this recipe but it's good Tidewater Cole Slaw ; 1 1/2 cups mayo, 1/2 cup white vinegar, 1/3 cup sugar, 1 Tbsp celery seed, salt/pepper to taste, 1 head green cabbage, finely shredded, 2 carrots, finely grated, Mix and chill, we often use it to top a PP sandwich.

I'm not a huge slaw guy either so here's what we use. I alter the lime/vinegar/jalapeno content based on what I'm using it for and who is eating it... Not your typical slaw but we enjoy it... pretty good on pulled pork sandwich. Mixing some up tomorrow with extra jalapeno and lime for fish tacos.

1/2 C Mayo
1/2 C sour cream
3 Limes squeezed
Use one lime peel for some zest
1 diced jalepeno
2 cloves crushed garlic
1/3 C chopped cilantro
8 C sliced green cabbage (I just but a bag pre-cut)
4 diced green onion
3 TB apple cider vinegar
Salt to taste

Mix it all up and let it chill for a while

I like slaw but not a huge mayo fan..anyone have a non-mayo mixture recipe?

Whatever slaw you make add cilantro in it. For an entire head of cabbage I add 1 bunch of cilantro and it makes such a unique flavor change. Everyone that has told me they dislike cilantro likes my slaw.

-Head of cabbage
-3-4 carrots
-1 bunch cilantro
-2-4 jalapenos
-Mayo and Apple cider vinegar
-Salt, pepper and cumin to taste

Figure out your mayo/vinegar ratio you like, but this is my go to base and people love it.

I don't know any recipes but I'll throw this bit of information out there! When you make the slaw it is always best to chill for 24 hours before eating! I've ate several home made slaw and this seems to be the best time frame for letting it chill and let all flavors come together!

I find that most people I know, who dislike coleslaw, actually prefer the grated cabbage over the shredded if they are willing to try it.

You will also find there are so many spins on slaw, just like any other food item. Here are a list of slaw recipes that brethren have posted over the years.

Guerry's Slaw

One head chopped cabbage - no other vegies!
1/2 cup vinegar
6 tbs sugar
6 tbs EVOO
2 1/2 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp celery seed
1 tsp dried celery
1 tbs hot sauce to taste

Combine vinegar, oil and other ingredients in a sealed jar and give it a vigorous shake. Pour over chopped cabbage and toss. Let sit in fridge for two hours or longer (Overnight if you can resist). Toss again before serving.

This will juice up quite a bit so you can use a slotted spoon to serve if you wish.

My wife grinds her cabbage thru a salad shooter. We would have never even bought one, but we saw a food vendor doing onions at a flea market. We bought one at a thrift store and have never looked back. It gets used for everything from cabbage to cheese.

i am really digging this recipe for some reason?

1. Go to the grocery store
2. Get a bag of shredded slaw mix and a jar of Marzetti slaw dressing
3. Chop it a little more
4. Add a little sugar
5. Mix in a little of the Marzetti slaw dressing

Makes a great slaw....This is an old family secret recipe.

Search for patio daddios tangy slaw. It's by far my favorite slaw, and there's no mayo. Do what fnbish suggests and add cilantro to make it even better.

Do a web search for Danny Gauldens coleslaw with garlic. Good stuff!

this works for me every time with many kudos

get a bag of cole slaw greens at the grocer

Cole Slaw
• 1/4 cup vinegar
• ¼ cup mayonnaise
• ¼ cup finely diced onion
• 2 tablespoons sugar
• 1 teaspoon celery seed
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon pepper
• 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
• 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper

Combine vinegar, onion, sugar, and seasonings. Mix in green pepper. Stir into the chopped cabbage

I like slaw, but not the plain vinegar type that you get at KFC  For me slaw has to have some mustard in it, and creamy. Have never tried it with cilantro, will have to try that, sounds good! :thumb:
