A China Kamado manufacturer sent me a 12" ceramic grill for me to add my controller and to sell together.
Unfortunately the Mini-Kamado was broken by shipper. If you guys meet the same puzzle, why do not develop kamado grill by casting iron. It can be made in 4 parts, base, middle, cover, and inner. This way even for a 22" pit, the weight of single part is under 100 lbs. Any adult can handle it by hands. Retail price will be under $1000. What do you think. |

Cast iron is heavier and uninsulated.
Unless i am missing something, the Steel Keg type design solves your originally stated cracking problem much more elegantly, is lighter and is insulated. What do you see as the advantage of cast iron?

heavy cast iron itself is a heat sink and will maintain a more stable temperature.
Can simply wrap a fibergalss blanket outside for haat insulation. How thick steel Steel Keg has. |

I have been thinking ceramic smoker.
This is my plan. Make a backwoods style, cabinet, 3 grills. But instead of double walls, I can make it one wall of 1 mm stainless steel. Also I will make ceramic block/lining, size 8" height, width 4" to 10", thickness 1/2" or 1". Ceramic lining can be inerted inside around the wall. The side opened door will be also lininged by ceramic block. For same weight and size, this cabinet smoker will have bigger grilling area. and If one block is broken, you can simply change that block. Production cost of 1/2" and 1" thickness will have less difference. But shipping cost will be higher. What do you want. 1/2" or 1" thickness |
