Can u grill on a weber smokey mountain?

It is possible, just not optimal. You can just use the bottom and one of the racks that sits on top of the charcoal ring.
There you go!

And it will look like this:

Nice job on the tabs Phu!

Find him a kettle off craigslist for $20 - $30 and then buy the WSM.
This, ^^^, is your answer.

Could also get the new performer style akorn- also would be a great smoker or griller.

I would say get him the performer I have a Performer Platinum but I also have what's called a Smokenator look it up on Google and I smoke everything one it from Ribs, Brisket, Port Butt, Pork Shoulders, whatever and it only like $75 for it I love and highly recommend it to anyone that has any type of Weber kettle grill. JMHO

just get the wsm, the more he low and slows it the more he will love it.

Large Big Green Egg,with accessories,The World's Best Smoker and Grill. There are others out there that are great.Ceramics can grill, smoke or bake.Very Versatile for any type cook with only one cooker.Just an honest opinion.

For the price, get him a 22 inch kettle with a Smokenator 1000 (available on amazon for around $60-$70). That will give him the option to grill burgers and steaks and then drop the Smokenator in to do some low and slow.

Yeah sure he could just set up the charcoal on either side of the kettle and place a drip pan under the meat but what guy doesn't like gadgets and gizmos?! Plus, the Smokenator does allow for true indirect heat and makes things easier to manage.

Now, I am not opposed in any way to having gizmos for the sake of having them, but I don't see any reason to get a Smokenator to do BBQ on a 22.5" kettle. I do probably 90% of my BBQ'ing on a 22.5" OTG (the other 10% I do on my mini-WSM smokey Joe mod). In fact, researching the Smokenator is what led me to this forum in the first place, and reading the methods use by others convinced me that it was a waste.

I use one of two methods (both of which I learned about from the brethren) to cook LnS on the kettle, either the firebrick method, which is pretty much a cheap version of the smokenator, that will give me about 5-6 hours of consistent temps (which, as I understand it, is about the same amount of time you can rely on from the Smokenator with one load of coals). The downside to this method, just like with the Smokenator, is that if you really want to cook LnS, you need to replenish the water pan regularly, and if you are doing longer cooks, you also need to replenish the coals.

For longer cooks, I use the ring of fire method. With this method, I can maintain temps of around 210-220 for as long as 10 hours with no water pan. As a matter of fact, last Sunday, I put a brisket on at about 8 p.m. It took about 2 hours to get up to temp, and then maintained that temp (210-220) for about 10 hours. In the morning, I banked some unlit coals to one side walled off by fire bricks, took the remaining lit coals and put them on top, and finished the cook that way.

Anyway, nothing against the Smokenator, but for the cost of 2 fire bricks I can do exactly the same thing.

I have the small and large WSMs as well as a kettle with a smokenator. O use the smokenator for chicken and ribs and it works great, just not for cooks over 5 hours. Unless you buy the hinged grill so you can add coals. But opening the lid kills your temp. I also got the hovergrill which adds another grill level to the kettle so you can have two layers of wings. I bought my dad the little wsm and he loves it. They are super easy to use and make amazing 'cue.

First, you're a good son for getting your dad a grill or smoker. My son got me a Weber grilll for Christmas several years and we had lots of great time grilling on it. I recently gave him my WSM since he's now in an apartment that'll let him cook outside (figured he wanted the Weber OTG but his roommate has a grill).

So think long term and get what you think you might want to get back in the future.

This. I have this setup and its great. I use my large smoker for big things or loNg nights, but this gets used plenty, and I also enjoy a proper grill the rest of the time,

Grill/Smoker I would get him a Akorn I think he would love it, I know I do just my 2cent.

I agree, I picked one up over a month ago and my other ones are all sitting around unused now.Last weekend for example I did spare ribs on it for 4 hours, when they were done I just opened the vents ran it up to about 600 degrees and seared some sirloins for about 6 minutes. And I still have half the lump I started with in the smoker for the next cook, hard to beat for the price

Temps were near 0 that day with a 20 mph wind and the temps held fine with hardly any adjustments
