Long Island *Northport VA Hospital* Save the date August 24.

I'd love to lend a hand. My grandpa has received care at the Northport VA Hospital numerous times and my cousin is a member of the Northport VA Fire Department.

This is something my wife and I might enjoy doing. Could anyone that has participated before give this noob an idea of what to expect. What should we bring other then our WSM, BBQ accessories and ourselves? And is there a local hotel that my wife could bed down for the night at?

Here is a response that I posted to someone else in another thread that asked a similar question.

Based on last year . . .

Suffolk County Police Veterans Association bought the meats.

The BBQ Brethren supplied sauces/rubs.

Cookers used were a few large capacity cookers. Poobah (Phil Rizzardi) coordinated that.

Some just have to show up becaue there are a lot of hands needed to prep and fill the cookers.

They'll be more details as we get closer.

Some of the most rewarding fun time you will ever have.

FYI, to give you some idea, here is the thread from last year's cook, complete with pictures. Keep in mind from Poobah's original post above that this year's is expected to be bigger. http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=139848

Here's a link to nearby hotels: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=hotel...ospital+loc:+Northport,+NY&hq=hotels&t=m&z=11

Will talk to the missus and get back.

I talked to the missus over lunch and she likes the idea "If we can be helpful". Her father served in Korea and she was a military wife for a number of years.

So....we are in!!

Definately in. Just let me know what I need to bring and when to be there

i spoke to officer Ross this morning. All systems go. I'll start working with him after the manorville contest is completed. They are covering all supplies, we will need rubs, fuel, cookers and manpower. Alot of cooker space will be needed obviously, so you folks with large pits, speak up! Head count is 800-1000 this year. Last year was gulf war forward, this year we will have Vets going back to vietnam era, hospital residents and outpatient. This is an awesome event Im really looking forward too.
