I would like to enter a competition in my area and was wondering if I can enter with a UDS? You have to start somewhere.

Thanks,

Big Pappa UDS

I have seen alot of teams using them. I have seen as many as 4 in one camp. 1 for each meat I suppose.
Good luck and have FUN:grin:

I've been using them since I started competing 4 years ago.
2 First place briskets, 1 First place ribs and numerous other calls in all catagories.

Do it!

Not that we are any one, but we have used three UDS with no other smoker or grill.

I would say that two would be my minimum for a comp. I have no problem cooking all four categories on one, but space starts to become an issue. Three is nice because you can eliminate some of the lid lifting.

As a matter of fact, I built two (for $50 total) on a Wed and smoked a contest with them on Friday. They don't have to be fancy, if you put the trophy on it after the contest... it makes them fancier.

I have always competed with two drums and switched between a small wsm or 30 gallon drum for chicken. This year I plan to do it all on two 55 gallon drums. Big meats on one and small meats on the other.

Lots of Drums out there you will feel right at home. Whenever I get ADD about a pit and sell it, I always fall back to my original drums for competing.

I'll be taking one as back up with me this year. I know I can get it started quickly and cook quickly if needed very versatile piece of kit.

5 Contests with us using the 3 UDSs. 1 call for ribs, 1 call for brisket, 2 calls for pork, 1 call for special category (turkey) 3rd vegetable at the American Royal, and 1 GC.

I sorta like them.

You'll quickly see....many folks use these in competition. Our team built 2 before our first contest just to be able to enter.

Heck, at that first contest I saw a team using a modded filing cabinet cooker. If I'm remembering correctly, they took 1st place chicken at that event. As many say, it ain't the cooker!

Best of luck!

6 Comps last year using 3 UDS' only. 2GC, 1RGC, 2 top 10's, 1 in the teens out of 88 and 1st at the AR in Ribs, all on Gateway Drum Smokers - Not your typical UDS!

Several first place chicken, brisket and ribs calls last year on my design UDS. Got a $4000 vault and I still cook chicken on my UDS.

If I can give just one bit of advice....NEVER, EVER leave the lids off on your drums after the last turn in!!

Are you guys serious??? You are really winning 1st place at the Jack and Royal with these things??

So will you let me come by and look at your smokers next week in Columbia? Those sound pretty powerful

That was Flavor File in Green Lane. No, they didn't get a call but that was one sweet cooker. They were a group of firemen that rescued the metal filing cabinet from a burning building. They turned it into a cooker with the bottom drawer being the firebox and the other drawers being their meat shelves. It was pretty cool!
