Contest Results Sams Club Bentonville

Very humbling experience for us getting last in chicken 159 and last in ribs 161, but certainly a great experience. Kudos to Sam’s Club for putting on the event and all the people that made it happen.

Nice picture. Got to meet Doug (aka Balls Casten), and also Alexa and Vince from RnQ, and a bunch of other people I only know from here. Was a lot of fun in a very tough field. Would have liked to meet the guys from Duck Commander but that line was crazy.

The first time I saw that UAV flying around, I wondered what was going on. Great pics!! I see plenty of shiggin possibilities with that thing........

First congrats to Killer B's for their GC and to Iowa's Smokey D's their RGC, Second it was great to meet everyone; what a field and yes, we got waffle-crushed coming in at 43rd.

Now for the other part -We were totally underwhelmed by this event; We heard stories of piles of goodies for the teams brought in on a flat bed; not this year - this year it was two pieces of beef. It's the $150k culmination of a national ladder tournament and we have to buy ice, then they jack us for 30% more when we go to settle? $10k local events give us ice. How about servicing the porta pots once? They were pretty nasty by Saturday; better yet, how about a couple of those trailer portable restrooms, at least for the ladies?

I know this reads petty and whiny but it's the Sam's Club Crown Jewel event, they can do better.

Congrats to everyone there and especially Jim and Jan on their win and Iowa Smokey D's on their reserve. I got to meet a lot of brethren I don't normally get to see and that always makes an event for me.

Great meeting you this weekend! That helicopter type device was sweet. Sorry to hear about your chicken and ribs. That brisket was the best one I cooked all year and ended up 44th out of 50.

Slamdunkpro it was great being your neighbor and getting to put a face with a name.
We saw that little helicopter thing flying around and thought we maybe drank too much on Friday night.
Congrats to all who heard their names. 45th in chicken for us.....Ouch
Hope to be back next year.

Good times

Happy, happy, happy

Yes we did it, new toy Kathy was nice enough to let me buy. DJI Phantom.
Can I assume we will have flight clearance at your contest? :)

We won the gas grill!

Congrats to killer Bs and Iowa Smokey Ds

I enjoyed meeting a lot of you as well!

And thanks Yoder smokers for making a great pit to cook on this weekend!

Bada$$ video Doug! Very cool, I need one.
GREAT Yoder rig Jesse and MTC, nice to meet you guys.

Rub you are definitely one of the nicest, most personal guys I have met, cannot wait to get down to Florida here soon and enjoy a couple drinks on the beach!!

My thoughts exactly on the whole Sam's Club Series. Yeah, I know, there is the potential to win a huge amount of money, but getting to the lucky 50 teams is a crap shoot, at least it has shown to be that in the southeast. I point to the example of "Table 1" in the pork category at the Hendersonville, TN Regional contest.

Doing one of these Sam's Club contests is kinda like shopping in a Wal-Mart. Not much there for folks who know there are other choices out there. They are the world's largest retailer and could definitely provide some classier infrastructure with portable trailer toilets/etc. And for goodness sake...it wouldn't cost THAT much to run some 1" PEX piping from a metered fire hydrant or the hose spigot at the tire center. We've had this discussion before on this site and many think otherwise...

I'm glad to see one mega corp get involved with Competition BBQ. I can't believe another one or 10 haven't jumped in yet. They will. It's coming. It's just that it is really cheap to do so now. When the other big players get here, it won't be so inexpensive for them to get in...

Yeah, I think everyone that didn't win should bitch until no company invests big bucks in Bbq. Pull up your big girl panties and stop polluting this thread.

This thread is about the winners. Good job guys!

I wasn't bitching. Just stating some facts and opinions of the Sam's-backed contests versus other contests put on by other (less-funded) organizers.

The Sam's Club local contest in Marietta, GA has never filled the 30-team max roster in any of it's 3 contests. It's a $10,000 contest in an area where there's about 10 BBQ teams that reside in the county that the contest is in. That's 1/3 of the field, yet many of those 10 or so teams chose to compete in another contest in the Atlanta Metro area that weekend.

Should WM move the Marietta, GA Contest to another store? Possibly. I don't care.

And yes, a big congrats to Jim and Jan Burg for bringing home that $50k+ in prize money to Georgia.

I have done 7 of these things now, and I like them and will be back if they continue to offer it. It's not assured, Wal Mart will assess it year by year.
