Just was looking at their website and it seems there are two separate, full competitions this year on the same weekend at the same site?

There are judges applications up, and cooks apps for what they are calling the Saturday contest and the Sunday contest.

Saturday contest includes an optional extra "Black Box" category over and above the main 4 meats, and Saturday will have a dessert option.

I've never heard of this being done before anywhere, although I know some have done 2 back to backs on the same weekend, but in different locations. (Except the Royal, or dual sanctioned events like Murphysboro)

I confirmed with one of the organizers that this is 2 full comps, one site, same weekend, and there's a caveat posted on the application....

IMPORTANT NOTE: To be eligible to participate in this additional contest you must compete in the regular contest which is held on Sunday May 25, 2014. There are no exceptions to this note.
Here is the great part…this contest is set at a flat entrance fee (not including side comp), regardless of the size space you have for the Sunday contest.

I'm guessing they did that so they could guarantee once you're in, you know you aren't going anywhere until Sunday after turn ins

So wondering, how many that plan to do this one will be doing both, , how many just Sunday, and why?

We're kind of on the fence right now, so curious what folks are thinking

I think I heard they are requiring both if you sign up from fri/sat is because the way they ate going to park people. Leaving on Sat when others are coming in would be very difficult. I know of at least 6 MI teams that plan on cooking in both events.

First I heard of it was yesterday., And yes Rich, I'm sure you're right about getting in or leaving between Friday and Sunday.

We just never have done one like that, so not sure yet if we want to enter both or just Sunday.

It would be a nightmare trying to allow teams to pull out in the middle of a contest.. this was me requiring it and not them. I've seen too many things go wrong when you let the cooks run a contest... There have been these contesrs, especially out West. There are a few set for the Midwest this year. Time to step up and put the big boy pants on!!! Don't want MI boys think they are trying to pull a fast one on us Illini.

Let me know if you have any questions, Dan. For the record, this was my suggestion to our BBQ committee. I will take responsibility for talking them into it, whether good or bad...

Are you going to bring product over to sell? The subject of security was brought up. I told them that I didn't want to lose my security detail..

We've done duals/multis in the same venue before. We won two contests in one day (one KCBS, one IBCA) and did another set of contests that were THREE contests in one weekend (Fairfield, CA '09) -- one Saturday contest, one Sunday contest, and one that was split in its categories over the two days. The turn-ins ran: SAT chicken-ribs-pork-brisket-chicken-ribs, and SUN chicken-ribs-pork-brisket-pork-brisket.

Multi-contests are a grind, no doubt, BUT they're easier than doing a double in separate locations. And anytime we can pay one set of travel expenses for two sets of scores, we consider it a good deal.

Sounds interesting, might be a good way to get in more contests without more driving, especially in northern states that have shorter seasons anyway.

I really like this concept. Doing a comp at Buffalo Run Casino in March that has a similar format. Why not do 2 the same weekend? Makes sense to me, already there.

If it wasn't such a long pull, I'd do Westmont. Need my butt kicked by Illini, everyone else has.

We are in for both. We have always shown up on Friday anyways. Why not do a little cooking while I'm drinking. Saves on a lot of expense of a comp...or at least fuel costs. Plus we are there and setup already. It was a no brainer for us. Can't wait!

They going to let us park thursday night scottie? last year wasn't my finest hour trying to get parked in there as one of the last teams to arrive (that 45 minute ride was horrible).

They rarely if ever allow that Corey. Just have to get in early Friday.

Wondering then if the awards for both will be Sunday. Makes sense, but last years awards ran pretty long....fortunately finishing just before the downpour!

That guy does drag them along a bit.

Thought I would be fine last year but it was pretty packed by the time I got there.

If you bring a bottle of Jack, I will make sure you get parked on Thursday. 8) Thursday shouldn't be a problem. We will be laying out the spots on Wednesday, but don't hold me to anything. There were plenty of teams pulling in on Thursday last year.

If you have not learned anything about the awards. Bring an umbrella for sun or rain... and bring a well stocked cooler. Jim doesn't feel he drags on the awards... I always tell him differently...

You can always contact me Corey. For now, I still have a little pull. Not much, but a little....:p

Let me answer with a question. Does the person that currently announce the awards like to talk?

Honestly, this is still in discussion. I suggested doing them right after the amateur awards on Saturday. Then again on Sunday. I need to know how much I will party on Saturday!!! :p

If he does them on Saturday he might be sick of talking enough on Sunday to rush a little. :)

OK... Good point :becky:

The reason I asked is the typical awards time is right in the middle of when we would be doing prep work for the next competition.
